hot tamales

mmmm, cuban-style tamales! My friend vera opened her home to the cooking ladies of durham club and taught us some of her kitchen secrets. We spent the afternoon assembling little pockets of savory goodness, chatting and waiting, drinking and waiting for the steamed corn + meat/veggies/shrimp. They were so worth the wait.

la Virgen de Guadalupe

During Immaculate Conception’s beautiful annual celebration of la Virgen de Guadalupe, the resplendent Lady resided on a rose-covered float that processed through Durham neighborhoods. She was accompanied by singing and dancing parishoners, many Juan Diegos, and some guys in mysterious masks. Everyone ended up at the church for a mass to celebrate the holy day.

durham’s new sk8park

durham skate park

Opening day at Durham's new skate park on Foster St., just up the hill from the farmers' market.

Hundreds of folks came to watch skaters while bands played a Troika Music Festival stage on a perfect day that felt a lot more like mid-May than mid-November. The skaters have a nice view of Durham’s skyline from their smooth concrete ramps, rails, steps, quarter pipe, clamshell, and pool.

fried green tomatoes for dinner

I harvested the last of our little summer veggie garden to make way for fall/winter crops.

fall garden

With the help of friends we made the bed a wider and longer and gave it a sweet serpentine curve.

With luck and row covers, our new front yard community garden will bestow us with swiss chard, boc choi, lettuce, collards, kale, and broccoli through the darkest of months.
